WORCESTER, MA. – It looked like the Pace University volleyball team was condemned to a 3-0 sweep at the hands of the Assumption University Greyhounds Tuesday evening, but the Setters turned the tables and executed a reverse sweep to return home with a 3-2 win.
With their backs against the wall, the Setters buckled down in the third set. Midway through the set, Pace went on a 7-1 run to gain a 14-9 advantage, which would a gap large enough to keep the Greyhounds at bay for Pace to force a fourth set, 25-18.
In the opening moments of the fourth set, Assumption rattled off six straight points to erase an early Pace lead and take a 12-9 lead early on. The Setters took the next three points to knot the set up at 12-12. Assumption had Pace right where they wanted them with a 22-20 lead but could not buy another point as Pace got kills from
Madisen Lupica,
Karielys Melendez and
Daniella Abbastante to gain a set point.
Brielle Jones delivered a service ace to force a fifth set, 25-22.
The fifth set was all Pace, with the Setters establishing a 7-2 lead early. The final point came from Jones, who took a set from
Georgette Cosentino and did what she does best, end points with a kill to send the Setters home with the victory.
Jones and Abbastante provided 16 and 15 kills respectively while Jones added 12 digs for a double-double.
Yasmeen Muhammad provided 12 kills of her own while
Annika Blas-Cedeno and
Jamie Bittiger dug out 25 and 11 digs each.
