Pace Women's Soccer Falls to Adelphi, 4-1

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Facing an Adelphi team that is currently sitting atop the Northeast-10 Conference standings, Pace women's soccer was dealt a home defeat at the hands of the red hot Panthers, 4-1.

Pace's record falls to 2-3 in the conference and 4-4-2 overall, while Adelphi remains unbeaten in the NE10 at 5-0-1, and 7-2-1 all-in-all. The loss marks the first time this season that the Setters have suffered back-to-back defeats.

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes when Pace's Cecilia Puentes (Garwood, N.J./Arthur L Johnson) was caught in possession near midfield. The senior was stripped of the ball by Dylann Trahey, who dribbled the ball all the way down to the tip of the box where she created a give-and-go opportunity with Gia Mandile. Trahey was wide open when the ball came back to her, and she nestled the ball into the bottom of the far post for her second tally this year.

Pace head coach Mike Winn subbed Jillian Joe (Brookeville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) into the game in the 31st minute, a decision that quickly paid off as the junior wasted no time scoring her first career goal just five minutes later.

With the game tied 1-1 at the break, Adelphi reclaimed the lead less than four minutes into the second half when Maria D'Angelo finished off a long Hannah Franco pass for both her second goal and game-winner of the season.

Seven minutes later, freshman Alexis Lee (Staten Island, N.Y./Saint Joseph by the Sea) fouled D'Angelo inside the box, resulting in a Morgan Salmon penalty kick, which the junior coolly tucked away for her first collegiate goal.

The golazo of the night, however, was the insurance fourth score for the Panthers. Madison Apicella brilliantly took a corner that Kayla Mushorn volleyed into the back of the net putting the game out of reach. Apicella, a freshman, leads the NE10 in goals (5), assists (6), and points (16).

The Setters will look to get back on track when they pay a visit to a Saint Michael's team that is winless in the NE10 (0-3-2) on Saturday.
