Pace Women's Soccer Defeated at New Haven, 2-1

WEST HAVEN, CT – Playing on the road for the second straight game, the Pace University women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 conference matchup to New Haven on Wednesday afternoon.

The Setters fall to 2-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference, and 4-3-2 overall, while the Chargers (1-3 NE10, 3-4-1 overall) pick up their first three conference points of the season.

Although the first half of action was a back-and-forth affair possession-wise, neither starting goalkeeper was threatened until the 42nd minute.

Pace sophomore Allison Carr (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) was the first to a Chargers' goal kick near midfield and dribbled the ball downfield, crossing in a ball that went off goalie Amanda McQuillan's hands and landing right in front of Hannah Sugden (Adams, N.Y./Belleville Henderson Central). The senior tapped home the first tally of the game and her second of 2022, giving the Blue and Gold a 1-0 lead heading into the locker rooms.

Right off the bat in the second half, however, New Haven took charge of the game, dominating the action, and limiting the Setters defensively to just three total shots, none on goal.

Ten minutes into the second half, freshman Caitlin Toom intercepted an Anna English (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos) clear attempt deep in Setters' territory and launched a pass to senior Madison Blonde who dribbled past the defender giving herself just enough space and time inside the box to blast a shot past sophomore Annabella Cole (Selden, N.Y./St. Anthony's) for the game-tying goal. It was the first New Haven score since Sept. 3, which coincidentally also belonged to Blonde.

The Chargers continued to assert their will on the action but could not find the back of the net until the waning moments.

In 88th minute, freshman Ashlee Crumrine crossed a long range pass to Blonde whose first touch was too heavy, inadvertently causing freshman defender Meghan Burke (Foxborough, Mass./Foxborough) to fall to the ground. Showing great composure, Blonde spun around, reset, and put the game away, scoring the late game-winner and giving her a second-half brace.

Pace is back home on Tuesday night for a clash with Adelphi University (3-0-1 NE10, 5-2-1 overall). The Panthers enter Pace Stadium sitting in first place in the conference standings.
