SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Pace University women's soccer team completed its most impressive come-from-behind performance in a season already filled with them and knocked yet another NE10 foe from the realm of the unbeatens, defeating American International College on the road, 3-2, erasing a two-goal deficit in the process.
Â
The Setters improve to 2-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, and 4-2-2 overall, while AIC drops to 2-1 and 4-1-1.
Â
The Yellow Jackets came out on the attack as two nicely passed Trystin Burger through balls gave AIC a 2-0 lead 21 minutes into the game. The graduate student's two assists were finished by sophomore Charlotte Bernard first, followed by freshman Alyssa Stetson.
Â
The Setters cut into the lead five minutes before the halftime whistle when a flawlessly executed give-and-go between seniors
Aryanna Ortiz (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and
Hannah Sugden (Adams, N.Y./Belleville Henderson Central)Â gave Ortiz room to operate. After getting the ball back from Sugden, Ortiz dribbled the ball forward, allowing
Ava Viebrock (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay Senior) time to get open inside the box, where Ortiz gracefully passed it to the freshman with her right foot. Viebrock put the ball away for her NE10-leading fourth goal, and Ortiz' first assist on the season.
In the 57
th minute, AIC's Leya Vohra went high with her cleats connecting with Viebrock. Vohra was assessed a yellow card, setting the stage for one of the most breathtaking goals in Pace women's soccer history.
Â
After a sidebar with head coach
Mike Winn, sophomore
Allison Carr (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) stepped up to take the free kick. With the ball placed on the downfield 25-yard hash, 30 yards away from the goal, Carr heaved a magisterial lefty ball into the sky that dropped just inside the upper corner of the far post past the outstretched arm of the goalkeeper, tying the game in spectacular fashion.
Â
Two and a half minutes later the Setters struck again.
Â
Playing on her 20
th birthday, junior
Amber Probasco (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) hit a ball that earned her team a vital corner kick. The resulting play was another exquisitely executed set piece, featuring just four touches among three Setters leading to a goal. Carr passed the corner to an onrushing
Cecilia Puentes (Garwood, N.J./Arthur L Johnson). The senior quickly got the ball back to Carr who lifted a cross towards the waiting head of Ortiz who scored the game-winner. It the was the third goal and assist for Ortiz and Carr respectively this season.
Â
Freshman
Anna Fiore (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) took over the goalkeeping duties for Pace at the top of the second half and picked up her third win in net, in a game where no goalkeeper on either side registered a save, as all five shot-on-goal opportunities were scored.
Â
AIC joins Saint Anselm as the second NE10 team to have their unbeaten record snapped by the Setters in the span of one week.
Â
The victory also marks the fifth time in just eight games played that the Blue and Gold have come back from behind to avoid a loss. Pace previously erased a two-goal deficit against Palm Beach Atlantic, and one-goal deficits against Georgian Court, Post, and Jefferson.
Â
Up next for the Setters is road contest with New Haven (2-3-2, 0-2 NE10) on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
