Pace Athletics Weekend Preview | Sept. 16-17

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – All six Pace University fall sports programs will compete in a jam-packed weekend of action. Field hockey is at home, as is volleyball for a Saturday doubleheader, while women's soccer, football, and men's and women's cross country are on the road.

FIELD HOCKEY

The Blue and Gold field hockey team competes in its final non-conference game when Bloomsburg visits Finnerty Field on Friday afternoon. It will be Pace's second straight home game in a three-day stretch with a PSAC opponent.

In their last action, the Setters lost to East Stroudsburg in their home opener on Tuesday, 5-0, while Bloomsburg defeated New Haven, 3-0, last Friday. Both teams enter the contest with matching 2-2 records.

Despite Pace's loss to the Warriors, the final score would have been far worse had not freshman goalkeeper Alina Buerger (Königs Wusterhausen, Brandenburg, Germany/Friedrich-Schiller-Gymnasium) set a school record with 18 saves in the game.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

  • Pace competes in the New Paltz Invitational (Friday, 4 p.m.) | Results

The Setter cross country teams head to Milton, N.Y., for the New Paltz Invitational.

In last week's Purchase College Invitational, the women's team finished 5th out of 10 teams, led by graduate student Molly Darfler-Sweeney's (Tannersville, N.Y./Hunter-Tannersville) 10th-place finish. Sophomore Meryl Mizell (Round Rock, Texas/Stony Point) crossed the finish line a minute and 15 seconds later in 14th place. Three additional teammates finished the race.

The men's team finished 9th overall, with junior CJ Defeo (East Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) placing first among Setters in 25th place, with four other men placing.

VOLLEYBALL

Pace volleyball completes the non-conference portion of its season with a Saturday doubleheader against Mercy College and Goldey-Beacom College.

The Setters lost to Queens College, 3-2, in their home opener on Tuesday night.

Sophomore Georgette Cosentino (Scarsdale, N.Y./The Ursuline School) registered a season-high with 44 assists to go along with 13 digs. Junior Madisen Lupica (Buchanon, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) aided in the effort with 19 kills and 10 digs.

FOOTBALL

The Setters' football team begins Northeast-10 Conference play on the road against Southern Connecticut State on Saturday night. Pace concluded non-NE10 action at 1-1, with a win against East Stroudsburg and a loss to Bentley last week.

Quarterback Carlton Aiken (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) amassed 260 of the team's 276 yards against the Falcons, including all three touchdowns, two in the air and one on the ground.

Both of Aiken's touchdown passes went to transfer student Teddy Harper (East Orange, N.J./Depaul Catholic), who has caught two touchdowns in two consecutive games to start his Setters career.

The Owls welcome Pace to New Haven with winless 0-2 record.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Following their first home loss of the season, the Pace women's soccer team travels to The Bay State for their first NE10 road game of the season when they take on AIC on Saturday afternoon.

The Setters dropped a 1-0 contest to Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday night to drop their record to 3-2-2.

AIC is currently tied with SCSU and Adelphi for tops in the conference. The Yellow Jackets are undefeated at 4-0-1 overall, including a 2-0 mark in the NE10, dispatching New Haven and Le Moyne without conceding a goal.

The reigning Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week will both be on the pitch Friday.

Last week, Rachel Newman was vital in keeping AIC's opponents scoreless while also scoring the game-winning penalty kick against New Haven. Pace forward Ava Viebrock (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay Senior) netted five points in two game last week, ranking the freshman second in the conference in goals (3) and points (8).
