PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. –The Pace University women's soccer team kicked off its NE10 campaign in style, shutting out undefeated Saint Anselm College, 3-0, from Pace Stadium.
The Setters improve to 3-1-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
The Hawks had only conceded two goals in four games coming into the contest, but Pace hung three goals on Saint Anselm in just 55 minutes.
All three goals came from players who had already scored once earlier in the season.
The first tally came in the 20
th minute when
Ava Viebrock (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay Senior) crossed a ball to an
Amber Probasco (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) shot-on-goal which was saved by Emma Hudson. The goalkeeper couldn't corral the ball, however, allowing Probasco to assist on an
Allison Carr (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) score. It was Probasco's first point on the season, and Carr's second goal.
Despite taking the lead, it was the Setters who were the more aggressive bunch the rest of the game, especially dominating in the mid and back fields.
10 minutes after the intermission, Pace was up 3-0 off two corner set pieces.
The first came two and a half minutes into the second half when
Andrea Flores' (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) corner was guided by Viebrock to senior
Aryanna Ortiz (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) who put it into the back of net for her second score and Viebrock's second assist on the season. Viebrock now ranks second the NE10 in goals (3) and points (8).
Mere minutes later, Probasco's lightning-quick speed and persistence led to two shots-on-goal and a pair of terrific saves by Hudson in the 52
nd and 54
th minutes, which resulted in two corner kicks for Pace, the second of which led to a goal.
Allison Carr's (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) 54
th minute corner dropped into the box and senior
Amber Bosser (Wingdale, N.Y./Dover) scored her second goal of the season putting the game out of reach for the Hawks.
The defensive backline of Bosser, sophomore
Alyssa Cabral (Hollis Hills, N.Y./Francis Lewis), and freshman
Anna English (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos) played the entirety of the tilt and stoutly held up in the face of any Hawks counterattacks, while midfield seniors Ortiz and
Cecilia Puentes (Garwood, N.J./Arthur L Johnson) also played the entire 90 minutes and controlled the game's tempo, along with freshman Flores' 86-minutes of workmanlike effort in the middle of the field.
The Blue and Gold next welcome Southern Connecticut State to Pace Stadium on Tuesday night.
