Pace Women's Soccer Earns Late Draw Against Georgian Court

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – In an endlessly entertaining season opener, the Pace University women's soccer team snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat, tying Georgian Court in the 87th minute for a 2-2 final score.

The Setters took the lead in the 12th minute off an intricately created goal that started off the foot of sophomore Allison Carr (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) and ended off her head and into the back of the net.

Carr found Aryanna Ortiz (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) near mid-field, who launched a pass to fellow senior Amber Bosser (Wingdale, N.Y./Dover), who left it off for Carr, who outlet the ball deep in the corner to junior Shannon Selvaggio (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley), who then got by a defender and crossed the ball into the box, where Carr headed in the first Pace goal of the season. The play stretched over 80 yards and no Lions player once touched the ball.

The Georgian Court response was swift, as the Lions forced the Blue & Gold defense into two consecutive fouls inside the box, resulting in two penalty kicks within a little over a minute of one another. Seniors Aliya Canfield and Emily Clayton netted the penalties in the 20th and 21st minutes, to give Georgian Court a 2-1 lead.

Despite dominating the scoring opportunities, the Setters trailed for the next 66 minutes. In total, Pace had nine shots-on-goal, while the Lions only had two the entire game, the two penalty shots.

In the 80th minute, Setters' head coach Mike Winn substituted Hannah Sugden (Adams, N.Y./Belleville Henderson Central) into the contest for the first time. The senior quickly paid dividends by equalizing the game seven minutes later, punching in her second career goal after a deep but powerful Carr shot came off the hands of Lions goalkeeper Alyssa Dias.

Pace will be back in non-conference action on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. when Post University travels to Pleasantville. Pace holds a 6-0 all-time record against the Eagles.
