PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Clinched by some final-second heroics in net, the Pace University women's lacrosse team earned a 13-12 win over Assumption in the NE10 Quarterfinals on Wednesday night.
With the Setters up by one goal and less than 10 seconds on the clock, sophomore goalie
Ashley Belfiore (Manorville, NY/Eastport South Manor) came up with a pair of point-blank saves to send Pace to the NE10 semifinals.
Belfiore's first stop came on an Assumption fast break, while she tallied another save at the buzzer on a Greyhound free-position attempt.
It was a tale of two halves for Pace as the Setters roared back from a 10-5 first-half deficit. Senior
Kayla Conway's (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) third goal of the game at 4:57 of the final frame provided Pace with its first lead since early in the first quarter.
Speaking of Conway, she finished the game with five draw controls to break Pace's single-season record in that department. She also tied for the team lead with five total points (3G, 2A) in the win.
Junior
Jolie Urraro (Sayville, N.Y./Connetquot) also recorded five points off four goals and an assist. Urraro's tally with 3:45 left in regulation served as the game-winner for the home squad.
The Setters' attack also featured a pair of goals from both
Sydney Juvelier (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) and
Margaret Flocco (Patterson, NY/Carmel) while freshman
Nikki Mottes (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) added two points off a goal and an assist.
Pace's 14
