WALTHAM, Mass. – Wrapping up a three-game series at Bentley, the Pace University baseball team defeated the Falcons twice on Saturday. The non-conference sweep pushes the Setters' overall record to 21-17 this season.
Game One – Pace 5, Bentley 4
Tied 4-4 in the final inning, it was a two-out, RBI double from
Mitchell McCabe (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford/ Bridgton Academy) that served as the game-winner. Freshman
Mason Baronian (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) scored on the play after leading off the frame with a single.
After taking the lead, sophomore
Dan Brown (East Northport, N.Y./John Glenn) registered a 1-2-3 seventh to pick up his first career save.
In addition to scoring the final run, Baronian also supplied three of Pace tallies with a triple in the second and a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Luke Jacobi (Edison, N.J./JP Stevens) and
Andrew Oakland (Holbrook, NY/Sachem HS East) joined Baronian with two hits in the contest—both tallying a pair of singles.
Freshman
Grant Biederman (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) moved to 3-0 on the mound after posting 1.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Game Two – Pace 17, Bentley 2
The Setters tied their single-game, season-high run total in the finale. Pace's 17-spot in just seven innings came from 19 hits, including 15 singles and four doubles.
10 different Setters recorded at least one hit, and remarkably, nine separate players picked up at least one RBI. Pace plated runs in six of the seven innings, including a pair of five-run frames.
Jacobi knocked in a team-high four runs on a 3-for-5 performance, while
Dean DePreta (Stamford, Conn./Westhill High School) and
Thomas Keefe (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) also tallied three hits apiece.
Matt Almonte (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) and
Johnny Guarantano (Nottingham, Md./RJ Reynolds High School) each finished with a team-high three runs scored.
In addition to the offensive eruption, a total of four Pace pitchers allowed just two runs on seven hits. Senior
Nelson Arroyo (Washingtonville, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) earned the win in his third start of the season.
Anthony Apollaro (Flower Mound, Texas/June Shelton) and
Marco Siracusa (Kinnelon, N.J./Bergen Catholic) each recorded two scoreless frames out of the bullpen, while
Christopher Vivenzio (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) tossed a scoreless seventh.
