PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Capping off a six-game home week, the Pace University softball team split a Saturday doubleheader against Stonehill College on Saturday. The Setters now hold a 10-8 record this season.
Game One – Pace 3, Stonehill 2
Timely hitting, along with another strong outing from freshman
Gisselle Garcia (Lemon Grove, Calif. /Mater Dei Catholic), fueled Pace's win in the opener.
Garcia tossed her third straight complete game, allowing just two runs across seven innings. She also matched her season high of 10 strikeouts—a mark that she has reached on three occasions.
Garcia's ERA now stands at just 1.78 in 67.0 innings pitched. The California native ranks fourth in the NE10 with 70 strikeouts.
Down 2-1 in the sixth, the Setters came up with several clutch hits to take the lead.
Following a lead-off walk to
Zoie Iverson (Oregon City, Ore./Alliance Charter Academy/ Oregon City High School), and a successful sac bunt by
Alexa Borino (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst), it was an RBI double off the bat of
Gwen Pederson (Sylmar, Calif./Granada Hills Charter) that tied the game up.
Pederson would then score Pace's go-ahead run on an RBI single from freshman
Jade Alvarado (West Covina, Calif./South Hills).
Iverson put Pace on the board in the fourth inning with an RBI triple down the right-field line.
Game Two – Stonehill 4, Pace 3
The Setters put three across in the first inning of the finale but were unable to hold on for the sweep.
Freshman
Brianna Shea (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino ) provided all three of Pace's runs. Up with the bases loaded, the Californian hammered her second triple of the week to clear the bases.
Shea followed up with a double in the third inning while Pederson also finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
Sophomore
Anna Acevedo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) pitched well out of the Pace bullpen. The Brooklyn native posted three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit in the process.
