PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Highlighted by a historical performance in the first game, the Pace University softball team swept a doubleheader against New Haven on Wednesday. The Setters (23-10, 11-7 NE10) have now won 13 of their last 15 games.
Game One – Pace 1, New Haven 0
Freshman
Gisselle Garcia (Lemon Grove, Calif. /Mater Dei Catholic) once again stole the show in the Setters' first win of the day. The rookie right-hander tossed Pace Softball's first seven-inning no-hitter since 2002 (Angela Locsin).
Garcia, now a winner of 11 consecutive decisions, was just two walks away from perfection while finishing the game with nine strikeouts, nine ground outs and three fly outs.
Wednesday served as yet another chapter in Garcia's marvelous rookie campaign. The California native is now 14-3 with a 1.27 ERA across 121.0 innings. She is also ranked second in the NE10 in total strikeouts (151).
The Setters' lone run came in the fifth inning off an RBI single from
Jade Alvarado (West Covina, Calif./South Hills) that scored
Zoie Iverson (Oregon City, Ore./Alliance Charter Academy/ Oregon City High School).
Game Two – Pace 5, New Haven 2
After just three hits in the opener, the Setters' bats came alive in Game Two.
Sophomore
Sammi Swenson (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) started Pace's scoring with a two-run home run in the second inning. Classmate
Jenny Gordon (Colonia, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) trotted home after leading off the frame with a single.
The Blue and Gold tacked on three more in the fourth inning courtesy of RBI singles by
NancyAnn Revilla (Staten Island, N.Y./Port Richmond) and
Gwen Pederson (Sylmar, Calif./Granada Hills Charter).
Gordon and freshman
Brianna Shea (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino ) each served as Pace's top hitters with 2-for-3 efforts.
Sophomore
Anna Acevedo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) pitched well for the Setters en route to improving to 5-2 this season.
The right-hander allowed just two runs across six innings before
Mackenzie Garrick (South River, N.J./South River) tallied her second save of the season.
