PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Propelled by two of the best offensive games of the season, the Pace University baseball team posted a doubleheader sweep at AIC on Sunday. The Setters improve their record to 14-11 overall, including a mark of 6-5 in the NE10.
Game One – Pace 15, AIC 1
The Blue and Gold set the tone on Sunday with a massive 11-run first inning. Pace finished the frame with eight hits and four walks. At one point, the Setters initiated three straight walks followed by four consecutive RBI singles.
Pace's top of the order put together a sensational outing. The Setters' first four batters finished 8-for-16 with 10 runs scored and six RBIs.
Freshman
Nicholas Montagna (Holmes, N.Y./Carmel) tallied a team-high five RBIs, including a bases-clearing double that capped off the Setters' monstrous first inning.
Graduate student
Matt Almonte (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) led the Setters with three hits, while
Andrew Primm (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa),
Luke Jacobi (Edison, N.J./JP Stevens), and
Mason Baronian (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) joined in with multiple hits of their own.
Junior
Patrick Gleason (Valhalla, N.Y./Valhalla) put together another great outing on the mound. The right-hander allowed just one run with five strikeouts in a complete-game seven innings.
Gleason's ERA improved to a team-best 1.98 across 41.0 frames of action.
Game Two – Pace 17, AIC 8
The Setters' onslaught continued with a season-high 17 runs in the finale. Pace racked up 19 total hits while plating multiple runs in five different innings.
Luke Jacobi (Edison, N.J./JP Stevens) served as a major highlight with one of the best offensive games in recent memory. The graduate outfielder went a perfect 6-for-6 with four runs scored and three RBIs.
Jacobi hammered a double and five singles, while also registering three stolen bases.
Almonte recorded another three hits in the second game while Montagna finished 3-for-4 with a team-high four RBIs and two runs scored.
