PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Led by a sensational afternoon of pitching, the Pace University's softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of AIC on Sunday. The two road wins improve the Setters' record to 13-8 overall this season, including a mark of 3-5 in the NE10.Â
Â
Game One – Pace 4, AIC 1
Freshman
Gisselle Garcia (Lemon Grove, Calif. /Mater Dei Catholic) was nothing short of spectacular in another complete-game win—her fifth in a row.Â
Â
Garcia racked up a remarkable 17 strikeouts in seven innings, while allowing just a single run on two hits. The right-hander struck out the side in three separate innings while upping her season total to 92 across 79 innings pitched.Â
Â
Garcia is now 5-0 in her last five appearances with 48 strikeouts and a 0.80 ERA in 35.0 innings of work.
Â
The Setters' run support came courtesy of a big fourth inning. Junior
Carolina Iturriaga (North Hills, Calif./Grover Cleveland) started the rally with a lead-off double before scoring the game's first run on an RBI single from
Alexandra Tejeda (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Bar).Â
Â
Tejeda would then trot home on a two-run home run by freshman
Brianna Shea (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino )—her first long ball of the season.Â
Â
Jade Alvarado (West Covina, Calif./South Hills) knocked in Pace's final run with an RBI single to bring home
Gwen Pederson (Sylmar, Calif./Granada Hills Charter).
Â
Game Two – Pace 9, AIC 1 (Six Innings)
Sophomore
Anna Acevedo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) followed Garcia's gem with a great outing of her own. The Brooklyn native allowed just one run on three hits in six innings of action.Â
Â
Acevedo finished with seven strikeouts while improving her record to 3-1 this season.Â
Â
Most of the Setters' offense in the finale came via a six-run fifth inning. Shea and Alvarado each knocked in a pair in the frame, while
Jenny Gordon (Colonia, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) and
Sammi Swenson (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) also registered RBI singles in the fifth.Â
Â
Pace's final tally was the result of an RBI double from
Zoie Iverson (Oregon City, Ore./Alliance Charter Academy/ Oregon City High School) in the sixth inning that scored Shea from first base.Â
