PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Seeing their first action of the 2022 season, the Pace University baseball team split a pair of non-conference contests on Saturday in Philadelphia, Pa. The Setters earned an 8-7 triumph over USciences before dropping a 15-3 contest to West Chester University.
Game One – Pace 8, USciences 7 (10 Innings)
Matt Almonte (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) served as the hero for the Blue and Gold in their season-opener. After going hitless across his first four at-bats, the graduate outfielder broke a 7-7 tie with a solo home run in the top of the 10
th inning.
Senior pitcher
Michael Roll (Ramsey, N.J./Bergen Catholic High School) closed the door in the bottom half of the 10
th to earn his ninth career victory on the mound.
It was a wild eighth inning between the Setters and Devils. With the game tied, 3-3, both teams scored four runs in the eighth frame.
Freshman
Matthew Rinaldi (Scarsdale, N.Y./Eastchester) and senior
Andrew Primm (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) each finished the game with two hits for Pace, while freshman
Mason Baronian (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) scored a pair of runs.
Rinaldi also walked twice in a terrific Setter debut.
Senior
Nelson Arroyo (Washingtonville, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) pitched well in relief for Pace. The right-hander allowed just one earned run, while striking out four, in two innings of work.
Junior right-hander
Christian Aich (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) started on the mound for the Setters. The New Jersey native yielded two earned runs across four frames of action.
Game Two – West Chester 15, Pace 3
The Setters had their chances in the second game of the day. Pace left 16 runners on base against the Rams.
Rinaldi followed up his two hits against USciences with two more knocks in the finale. Senior
Robert Chesney (Malverne, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) also tallied two hits, including an RBI double in the seventh inning.
The Blue and Gold used six pitchers against West Chester.
Anthony Apollaro (Flower Mound, Texas/June Shelton) and
Kasey Sullivan (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) each recorded shutout innings out of the bullpen.
