Batista Scores Double-Double In @PaceMBB's 78-76 OT Win Over Saint Rose

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. -- Setter senior forward Frankyn Batista (Barahona, Dominican Republic/Hyde / AIC) recorded a double-double in Pace men's basketball's 78-76 overtime win over The College of Saint Rose on Saturday night at Goldstein Fitness Center in a New Year's Eve thriller. Batista scored 20 points to go along with a game-best 14 rebounds in the win, which advanced the Setters' record to 11-3, 3-3 in NE10 action.

Along with Batista, starters Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass./Tech Boston / Southern Connecticut State) and Brandon Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush / FDU) scored 15 points each. Bennett, a junior guard, was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line and added six assists. Powell, a senior guard added eight rebounds and four assists. Freshman guard Jabari Nurse (Randolph, Mass./New Hampton Prep) scored 10 points in the win.

Pace led by as many as 13, 31-14, with 4:05 left in the first half and led 33-23 at the end of the first half.

Saint Rose (7-8, 1-6 NE10) continued on what would end up being a 16-5 run to open the second half to take an eventual 39-33 at 13:42 left in the second half.

The game remained close all the way to the end of regulation as Pace battled down from a five-point deficit, 62-57 with 1:51 left. Nurse converted a three-point play as he made a driving layup and the subsequent free throw following the foul to cut the Golden Knight led to two, 62-62 at 1;34 remaining. Brandon Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush / FDU) scored a layup with just under a minute to tie it up at 62. The Golden Knights missed on their lone opportunity to win, while Pace missed two attempts as the game went to extra time.

In the overtime period, the momentum seemed to favor Pace as the Setters settled down and took their biggest lead, 71-66, since the start of the second half.

Saint Rose came back with two made free throws to bring the Setter lead back to three, but a step back jump show by Brandon Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush / FDU) down the center put Pace back up by five, 73-68 with 1:27 remaining.

Batista capitalized on a Golden Knight turnover under the Saint Rose basket which he stole and turned around for a layup, giving the Setters a 75-68 lead with just under a minute left in overtime.

In the final minute, the Golden Knights rallied, with Shane O'Dell scoring quick inside shots to cut the Pace lead to three, 77-74 with 19 seconds on the clock.

Josh McGettigan scored with 11 seconds left to make it a one-point game, 77-76.

The Golden Knights continued to foul Pace, and Chaz Havey scored the first of two free throw opportunities to put Pace ahead 78-76 with three seconds remaining. Saint Rose got the rebound on the second miss, but time expired before a play could develop for Saint Rose.

O'Dell led the Golden Knights with 20 points. McGettigan added 16.

Up next for the Setters, who have won five in a row since Dec. 8, is an NE10 road contest at Adelphi on Wednesday, Jan. 4. It is the second game of a women's and men's doubleheader and will start at approximately 7:30 p.m.
