PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. --- In what ended up being a gritty Friday night game at Goldstein Fitness Center, the Pace women's basketball team outlasted Dominican 44-41. The win is the third straight for the Setters, first on their home court. Grad guard
Lauren Hackett (Commack, N.Y./St. Anthony's) led with 11 points. Sophomore forward
Arianna Stockinger (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Putnam Valley) had a game-best 10 rebounds.
The game started out with a made free throw by Setter grad guard
Kelsey Quain (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining). The free throw was scored prior to tip-off as the Chargers were tabbed with an administrative technical before the game. This set the tone for the evening as final came down to the waning seconds.
After the first period, Dominican took a 12-11 lead after Angelina DiMarsico, the Chargers' high-point scorer (11), gave them the late lead with a jumper with 24 seconds left.
Pace went ahead in the second quarter after the Setters went on a 9-3 run starting with a
Ciara Collins (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) jumper and ending two made free throws by forward
Tower Lorde (Saint Michael, Barbados/The St. Michael School) with just over two minutes to play. The run lasted a little under four minutes. The score remained in Pace's favor to end the half.
The Chargers dominated much of the third and earned their largest lead of the game 32-24 with 1:25 on the third period clock. The eight-point lead was the most by either team.
The Setters opened the final stanza with a 7-0 run as Collins netted a jumper off a Hackett steal the fellow freshman
Morgan Ryan (Plainfield, N.J./Rutgers Prep) netted a three, cutting Dominican's lead to one, 32-21 with 8:18 remaining. A Hackett jumper gave Pace back the lead, 33-32, but it was short-lived as Dominican's Alexis Suarez answered right back.
With the game tied at 39 and 34 seconds left, it was a battle to the finish. In the end, Pace made 6-of-8 free throws to seal the deal. Dominican did have a final chance to tie it up, getting possession and calling a time out after a missed free throw shot by
Katumina Mansaray (Ontario, Canada/Cardinal Newman Secondary School/Tilton School). DiMarsico took her chances with a long-ball, after making two of her last three three-point attempts. Hackett blocked the attempt getting Pace back the ball as time expired.
With the win, Pace advances to 4-7 on the season. Dominican falls to 6-5.
The Setters will break for holiday recess and will return on Saturday, Dec. 31 for a league home contest against College of Saint Rose. Tip off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Goldstein Fitness Center.
