Late Season Win For Pace Field Hockey, 5-2 Over Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. -  In a defining late-season performance, Pace University field hockey (10-7, 7-5 NE10) scored three third quarter goals to come back from down one to defeat Adelphi (10-8, 9-4 NE10), 5-2, on the road.

Adelphi took the first lead of the game in the 12th minute, but Setter senior defender Hannah Wyllie (Guildford, England/George Abbot School) tied things up halfway through the second period with a rebound shot for her first goal of the season.

Four minutes into the second half, Pace sophomore forward Krista Dietz (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) scored the eventual game-winning goal on a breakaway 1-v-1 opportunity which put the Setters ahead for good. The NE10 Player of the Week has been red-hot as of late, with eight goals scored and two assists in the last seven games.

In her first start since Sept. 4, junior forward Julia Eshelman paid dividends, lofting a penalty stroke into the back of the cage doubling the Pace lead in the third quarter.

Freshman midfielder Tavia Flecksteiner (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) took four shots in the game, all of which were on goal, the third of which resulted in the Setters' fourth tally of the game.

In the fourth period, off of a penalty corner, senior midfielder Jessica Wolfe (Halfmoon, N.Y./Shenendehowa) assisted on Pace's fifth goal of the game, finding junior defender Kate Demars (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) for an insurance score that put Pace ahead by four with 11 minutes to play.

Adelphi's Amanda Lee scored in the 50th minute, but, it was too little, too late for the Panthers.

The Setters and Panthers were evenly matched in statistical categories with Pace leading in shots, 16-14; while Adelphi led in penalty corners,11-9 and saves, 8-6. In Wednesday's NCAA Regional Rankings, Pace was ranked fifth with Adelphi ranked fourth.

Pace will host Franklin Pierce for the final regular-season game of 2022 on Saturday, Nov. 12. First faceoff is set for 4 p.m. Senior Day ceremonies for the Setters' senior class will start at 3:45 p.m.

With one game remaining in the regular-season Pace qualifies for the NE10 Championships with just one of the following three scenarios:
  1. A Senior Day home win over Franklin Pierce on Saturday.
  2. A Mercy loss to Saint Michael's on Saturday
  3. A Southern New Hampshire loss to Molloy on Saturday.
However, a Pace loss coupled with Mercy and SNHU wins would result in a tiebreaker situation based on the three teams' records versus whomever finishes tops in the conference, with only two of the three squads qualifying for the playoffs.
