PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. -- The Pace University women's basketball team was just edged by the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights, 62-57, on Saturday afternoon at the Goldstein Fitness Center.
Sophomore forward
Arianna Stockinger (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Putnam Valley) led the Setters with 10 points and rebounding with seven boards. Three players scored nine each with grad student guards
Lauren Hackett (Commack, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and
Kelsey Quain (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) and junior guard
Katumina Mansaray (Ontario, Canada/Cardinal Newman Secondary School/Tilton School). Quain shot 3-for-5 from beyond the arc.
The end of the first quarter had Pace (1-2) up 11-10. Coming in off the quick break, the Setters had advanced their lead to four point, 16-12, after a 3-ball by Stockinger. Bridgeport (3-1) tied it up 16-16 halfway through the second quarter. The two squads traded leads through the halftime, but the Purple Knights gained the advantage at the mid-game break 31-29.
In the third, Pace went up 36-32, capped by two free throws from Stockinger. Hackett, Mansaray and freshman forward
Ciara Collins (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) scored in the quick run. The momentum swung back toward Bridgeport as the Purple Knights took their biggest lead of the game so far, 46-39 with under three to play in the quarter. At the end of the period, Bridgeport led, 50-44.
Pace opened the final stanza with a three from Quain, instantly cutting Bridgeport's lead to three, 50-47. With 5:48 remaining, Pace had taken the lead scoring by two quick jumpers by Collins and Stockinger and capped by an outside basket from
Morgan Ryan (Plainfield, N.J./Rutgers Prep).
The Setters had the lead with just under four minutes left, 56-55 after a layup from Mansaray but a 7-1 run by Bridgeport finished the game for the Blue and Gold.
For the Purple Knights, Amani Melendez netted 17 points to lead a group of four Bridgeport players who scored in the double digits.
Next up, Pace will host Saint Anselm as NE10 action begins on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 5:30 p.m. at Goldstein Fitness Center.
