Setter Football Victorious In 17-14 Win Over Saint Anselm

Pleasantville, N.Y. – Saturday afternoon at Pace Stadium was filled with excitement and drama from start to finish as the Setters football squad defeated Saint Anselm College 17-14, holding on to the narrow victory to win its third game in a row and advance to 6-3 overall, 4-2 in NE10 action.

Quarterback Carlton Aiken (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) went 9-for-22 with 101 total yards and a touchdown. Aiken rushed for 145 yards. Nasir Robinson (Penns Grove, N.J./Penns Grove) had 11 carries for 32 yards.

The Setters scored on the opening possession, completing an eight-play drive in just over five minutes to put the Hawks in an early hole. Aiken rushed 43 yards to get to the Saint Anselm two-yard line on third down. Grad running back Brandon Sobotker (West Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) got the ball to the one-yard line before punching it in for a one-yard rushing touchdown with 9:49 on the clock. With the Dylan Squillacioti (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) kick going through the goal posts, Pace took a 7-0 lead.

After trading punts, Pace made it 14-0 with just over two minutes to go in the first quarter. The Setters needed only five plays and just over two minutes for the score. Aiken led the drive with a 12-yard pass to grad wide receiver Ramir Tann-Davis (Paterson, N.J./Paterson Eastside). Robinson pushed the ball down the field with two carries for five yards. It was an Aiken to Tann-Davis 20-yard touchdown that put the Setters ahead by two touchdowns.

The Hawks (5-3, 2-3 NE10) were poised to get three points to start the second quarter, but a 34-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Pace.

Saint Anselm scored with 7:11 left in the second quarter and the two teams went into halftime with the Setters up 14-7.
A 38-yard field goal by junior kicker Squillacioti advanced Pace's lead to 17-7 with 1:32 left in the third.

The Hawks scored their second touchdown of the afternoon on a 30-yard passing touch down with 9:52 left in the game.
Saint Anselm continued to put the pressure on right up until the end of the game as the Hawks attempted to put together a game-winning drive in the final eight seconds. Tackles by senior corner Anthony Holmes (Minehill, N.J./Pope John XXIII) and grad linebacker Dustin Huseinovic (Harrison, N.J./Harrison) put an end to the Hawks' drive as time ran out on the field.

Grad defensive lineman Nasier Givens (Newark, N.J./Orange) led the Setters defense with eight solo tackles and a total of 10. The defensive lineman also had two sacks. Huseinovic finished with seven total tackles, five solo.

The afternoon began with the unveiling of Danroy "DJ" Henry's No. 12 retired jersey, in memory of the former Setter. The unveiling was attended by University President Marvin Krislov, Director of Athletics Mark Brown, former head coach Chris D'Applito and Henry's teammates. The jersey retirement was the culmination of Pace University's Social Justice Week. Oct. 29 is the birthday of DJ Henry.

The Setters have a bye next weekend, but will return on Saturday, Nov. 12 for senior day against Bentley. Kickoff is slated for noon.
