RINDGE, N.H. – Despite erasing a 17-point second-half deficit, the Pace University men's basketball team dropped an 89-85 contest at Franklin Pierce on Tuesday night. The road loss shifts the Setters' record to 10-7 this season, including a mark of 6-4 in the NE10.
Trailing 58-41 early in the second half, the Setters rattled off a massive 30-9 run to take a four-point edge with 6:15 remaining.
The Ravens would respond with a 12-4 stretch of their own to regain the lead, before ultimately holding an 85-82 advantage with 50 seconds left.
Franklin Pierce was then able to clinch the road triumph courtesy of a turnaround, three-point heave as the shot clock expired, which yielded a six-point lead with just 18 ticks on the clock.
Junior
Bryan Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Canterbury School) piloted the Blue and Gold's comeback in the second half. Pace's leading scorer racked up a career-high 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field.
Powell recorded 21 of his points in the second half, while also finishing the game with nine rebounds and two blocks.
After Powell, it was a trio of 10-point scorers for the Blue and Gold.
Austin Gilbertson (Etters, Pa./Trinity),
Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) and
Brandon Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) all had matching scoring outputs.
Gilbertson and Jacobs also each dished out three assists, while combining for 10 rebounds.
All in all, the Setters shot the ball very well from the field. Pace finished 32-of-56 (57.1%) from the floor, including 11-for-22 (50%) from long range. Coach Healing's squad has now notched at least 80 points in five games this season.
