Pace Baseball Drops a Pair of Games at Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – In the first of back-to-back doubleheaders on Long Island this weekend, the Pace University baseball team dropped a pair of contests at Adelphi on Friday afternoon.

GAME ONE – Adelphi 13, Pace 12
In a wild, back-and-forth opening contest, it was a six-run eighth inning by Adelphi that proved to be the slight difference. The Setters answered with four across in the ninth before leaving the bases loaded to end the game.

The Blue and Gold led 5-0 after 3.5 innings, and then 8-7 prior to the Panthers' huge eighth. Pace's 12 runs came courtesy of 13 hits (11 singles and pair of doubles) and nine walks.

Mitchell McCabe (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford/ Bridgton Academy) and Andrew Primm (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) each recorded a team-high three RBIs, while Primm, Matt Bass (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), Matt Almonte (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle), and Andrew Oakland (Holbrook, NY/Sachem HS East) all tallied two hits apiece. Both of Oakland's knocks put tallies on the board as a double in the third gave Pace a 5-0 lead, and a single in the seventh lifted the edge to 7-6.

Sophomore Christian Aich (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial), who leads the Setters in both ERA and strikeouts this season, didn't allow an earned run across 3.2 innings in his sixth start of the season.

Trailing by five runs in the ninth, Pace loaded the bases with one out. A Luke Jacobi (Edison, N.J./JP Stevens) single plated one, while two hit-by-pitches and a walk brought the Setters within one run.

GAME TWO – Adelphi 7, Pace 2 (Seven Innings)
Five runs for Adelphi across the first two innings set the tone in Game Two. The Panthers then tacked on two more in the fourth to go up 7-2.

Harrison Treble (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Oyster Bay) put together half of Pace's six hits in the finale, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. He also tallied three stolen bases.

Almonte knocked in Pace's other run with an RBI single in the third. The New Rochelle native currently leads Pace in almost every offensive category, including batting average (.398), slugging (.633), RBIs (24) and runs scored (26).

Vincent Vartalone pitched well out of the bullpen, tossing a pair of scoreless innings to close out the game.
