WEST HAVEN, Conn. – In the first of consecutive doubleheaders at the University of New Haven this weekend, the Pace University softball team dropped a pair of contests against the Chargers on Saturday. The Setters were defeated 3-0 in the opener before falling 7-5 in Game Two.
After mustering up just four singles in the first contest of the day, Pace's offense came alive in the fifth inning of the finale.
Following base hits by
Emma Carruth (Torrance, Calif./Beverly Hills) and
Arielle Acosta (Union City, Calif./Moreau Catholic High School)--and a walk to
Isabelle Boudreau (Memramcook, New Brunswick, Canada/Mathieu-Martin)—freshman
Kaylani Miller (Los Angeles, Calif./Village Christian) launched her first-career grand slam to give the Setters a 5-4 lead. Miller is now batting a team-best .362 this season with three home runs and five triples.
Miller also scored Pace's first run in the second game off an RBI single from
Zoie Iverson (Oregon City, Ore./Alliance Charter Academy/ Oregon City High School) in the fourth inning.
Despite tallying a career-high 13 strikeouts in just six innings, junior
Maxibel Garcia (Passaic, N.J./Paterson Charter School for Science and Technology) picked up the loss in the opener. She finished the game with three runs against on just five hits allowed.
