PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Beginning a four-game series against the University of New Haven, the Pace University baseball team put together a doubleheader sweep of the Chargers on Saturday afternoon. The 13-8 and 4-1 victories improve the Setters' record to 13-10 this season, which includes an 8-8 mark in the NE10.
Game One – Pace 13, New Haven 8
It was a pair of huge innings for the Blue and Gold that sparked them to victory in Game One. Pace tallied a combined 11 runs in the second and fifth frames en route to opening up a 12-5 lead.
The Setters put forth six total hits in their big second inning, which included RBI doubles from
Dean DePreta (Stamford, Conn./Westhill High School),
Andrew Oakland (Holbrook, NY/Sachem HS East) and
Mitchell McCabe (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford/ Bridgton Academy).
Oakland followed up with an RBI single in the fifth, to go along with RBI knocks by
Harrison Treble (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Oyster Bay) and
Matt Almonte (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle).
McCabe, Oakland and
Miles Kelly (Mattituck, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) all finished the first contest with multiple hits, while
Johnny Guarantano (Nottingham, Md./RJ Reynolds High School) registered a team-high three RBIs.
Sophomore
Christian Aich (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) improved to 5-0 on the mound following his fifth start of the season. The right-hander allowed four earned runs across six innings, while striking out five.
Game Two – Pace 4, New Haven 1 (Seven Innings)
Following the high-scoring opener, the Setters pulled out a triumph in a well-pitched Game Two. Senior
Thomas Ippolito (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) tossed a seven-inning gem to lead Pace to victory.
Ippolito allowed just the single run on six hits (all singles) on the way to improving to 2-2 on the mound this season.
Kelly put Pace on the board in the first inning when he hammered an RBI ground-rule double to right-center field. Treble scored on the play after registering a one-out infield single. Kelly was then brought home on an RBI base hit by McCabe.
McCabe scored the Setters' third run in the fourth inning on an RBI single up the middle by
Robert Chesney (Malverne, NY/Kellenberg Memorial).
Pace's final tally came courtesy of a solo home run off the bat of Almonte in the fifth. Almonte has now launched a team-high five long balls this season, while also leading the Setters with 23 RBIs.
