PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Seeing their final home action of the regular season, the Pace University softball team put together a doubleheader sweep of Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday afternoon.
Game One – Pace 7, SCSU 2
A five-run first inning sparked the Setters in their first victory of the day. After giving up a pair of runs in the top half of the frame, Pace posted a five-spot—all with no outs—to seize momentum in the contest.
Following back-to-back RBI singles from
Kaylani Miller (Los Angeles, Calif./Village Christian) and
Briana Ryan (Wilmington, Calif./Carson), junior
Brittany Walkingstick (Peculiar, Mo. /Desert Ridge / Mesa Community College) launched a three-run blast to give the Setters a 5-2 edge.
After allowing the two runs in the first, Pace's starting pitcher
Emma Bernet (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W Baker) posted five consecutive scoreless innings to earn the victory. She finished the game with five strikeouts, while walking just one.
The Blue and Gold tacked on two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings off an RBI groundout by Miller, and an RBI single from
Alexandra Tejeda (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Bar).
Game Two – Pace 2, SCSU 1
The Setters pulled out a pitcher's duel in their second triumph of the afternoon. Senior
Mackenzie Garrick (South River, N.J./South River) went the distance in the circle, allowing the one run on just four hits. She yielded just a pair of singles after SCSU scored its only run in the second inning.
Pace's two runs came in the third inning courtesy of back-to-back RBI infield singles from
Isabelle Boudreau (Memramcook, New Brunswick, Canada/Mathieu-Martin) and Miller.
Ryan chipped in a hit of her own in the second contest, extending her current hitting streak to nine straight games. She is batting a red-hot .643 (18-for-28) across those nine matchups.
