PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – In the first official NE10 doubleheader of the 2021 season, the Pace University baseball team split a pair of contests to AIC on Saturday. The 1-1 day moves the Setters' record to 5-2 this spring.
Game One – Pace 13, AIC 5
Up 3-2 after three innings, the Setters used four-run efforts in both the fourth and the sixth frames to break the game open.
Senior
Matt Almonte (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) opened the scoring for Pace, hammering a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. Following his second long ball of the season, Almonte would go on to finish a single shy of the cycle in a 3-for-4, four-RBI first game. Â
Classmates
Mitchell McCabe (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford/ Bridgton Academy) and
Harrison Treble (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Oyster Bay) also recorded multiple hits in the opener, combining to go 4-for-7 with three RBIs and a walk.
Junior
Nate Carminucci (Somers, N.Y./North Salem High School) finished with three RBIs in Pace's triumph, punctuated by a two-run double in the eighth inning.
Right-hander
Michael Roll (Ramsey, N.J./Bergen Catholic High School) improved to 3-0 on the mound after tossing a solid 5.1 frames. The junior tallied five strikeouts, while allowing four earned runs.
Nelson Arroyo (Washingtonville, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) came on in relief of Roll, allowing just one run in 3.2 innings out of the bullpen.
Game Two – AIC 7, Pace 4 (11 innings)
The Setters battled back from an early 4-1 deficit in Game Two, but were unable to find the game-winner in extra innings.
After tallying three runs in the third to tie the game up, Pace went scoreless across the final eight innings of action.
Sophomore
Christian Aich (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) pitched extremely well in relief for the Setters. The right-hander posted 5.1 shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five batters.
Almonte added an RBI single in the finale while McCabe registered another two hits. Classmate
Dean DePreta (Stamford, Conn./Westhill High School) also finished with multiple knocks, going 2-for-5 with an RBI single in the fourth.
