ALBANY, N.Y. – Beginning a four-game road series against Saint Rose, the Pace University baseball team tallied a doubleheader sweep of the Golden Knights on Saturday. The two victories improve the Setters' record to 7-2 this season, including a 3-1 mark in the NE10.
Game One – Pace 8, Saint Rose 7
In a game that featured four different lead changes, the Setters tallied four runs in the ninth inning to claim a dramatic, comeback victory.
Trailing 7-4 with just three outs remaining, Pace rallied in the ninth. Senior
Mitchell McCabe (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford/ Bridgton Academy) became the hero for Pace when he drilled a two-out, game-tying double to center field. Fellow seniors,
Matt Bass (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and
Matt Almonte (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle), each scored on the play.
McCabe would then score the game-winning run off a Saint Rose error.
Bass and Almonte each finished the first game with a team-high three hits, while Almonte registered a team-best four RBIs.
Freshman pitcher
Christopher Vivenzio (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) earned the win on the mound after tossing scoreless eighth and ninth innings.
Game Two – Pace 9, Saint Rose 2
The Setters' sweep was catapulted by a five-run third inning of Game Two. They would then break the contest open by plating four more in the fifth.
McCabe and Almonte once again chipped in RBI hits in the win, while classmate
Harrison Treble (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Oyster Bay) knocked a bases-loaded triple in the fifth.
Sophomore
Christian Aich (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) improved to 2-0 on the mound this season, tossing five scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Aich has yielded just two earned runs across 14.1 innings this year (1.26 ERA).
