WEST HAVEN, Conn. – In their final tune-up prior to the official start of NE10 play, the Pace University baseball team swept a doubleheader at New Haven on Sunday afternoon. The victories improve the Setters' record to 4-1 this season.
GAME 1 – Pace 9, New Haven 3
The Setters erupted for 18 hits in the opener, while tallying runs in five separate innings. A three-run fifth provided Pace with a comfortable 7-0 lead.
Eight different players registered multiple hits for the Blue and Gold. Senior Matt Almonte (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) led the way with a 3-for-5, two-RBI contest while Greg Tsouprakos (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and Nate Carminucci (Somers, N.Y./North Salem High School) joined in with matching 2-for-4, two-RBI efforts of their own.
Junior Michael Roll (Ramsey, N.J./Bergen Catholic High School) earned the win on the mound, improving to 2-0 this season. The right-hander yielded two runs on three hits across five innings of work.
Senior Thomas Ippolito (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) pitched the final four frames, keeping Pace in front by allowing just one earned run.
GAME 2 – Pace 7, New Haven 3 (Eight Innings)
The Setters completed the sweep in style, erasing a 3-0 deficit before scoring four runs in the first frame of extras. After allowing three runs in the third, Pace put three across in the sixth to knot things up.
The Setters did all their damage with two outs in the sixth inning. A pair of Chargers errors, along with singles from Almonte and Mitchell McCabe (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford/ Bridgton Academy), sparked the rally. A wild pitch eventually brought McCabe home to tie the game up at 3-3.
It was another two-out rally in the eighth that sealed things for Pace. Carminucci doubled in a pair of runs to give the Setters their first lead of the game, while Robert Chesney (Malverne, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) and Johnny Guarantano (Nottingham, Md./RJ Reynolds High School) also recorded RBI knocks in the inning.
Pace used five pitchers in the finale, combining to allow just two earned runs across eight innings. Senior Greg Najar (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township) earned the win after tossing a scoreless eighth.
