Pace Softball Splits Saturday Doubleheader Against Adelphi

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Playing their first home game in nearly two years, the Pace University softball team split a doubleheader against Adelphi on Saturday afternoon.

GAME 1 – Pace 4, Adelphi 2
The Setters wasted no time in taking the lead in the first contest of the day. Pace tacked on a pair of runs in the first inning courtesy of an RBI triple from senior Briana Ryan (Wilmington, Calif./Carson) and an RBI double from junior Zoie Iverson (Oregon City, Ore./Alliance Charter Academy/ Oregon City High School). Junior Arielle Acosta (Union City, Calif./Moreau Catholic High School) scored the opening run of the afternoon after leading off the game with a double.

Pace took a 4-0 advantage in the fourth thanks to some great offensive execution. Heads-up base-running from Isabelle Boudreau (Memramcook, New Brunswick, Canada/Mathieu-Martin) allowed her to score from third on a throw down to second on a stolen base from Kaylani Miller (Los Angeles, Calif./Village Christian). Miller would then cross home plate on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Arianna Guarracino (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley).

Junior Maxibel Garcia (Passaic, N.J./Paterson Charter School for Science and Technology) earned the win in the circle after tossing a solid 5.2 innings. The right-hander allowed just one earned run on two hits, while striking out seven.

Senior Mackenzie Garrick (South River, N.J./South River) retired four consecutive batters to record her first-career save.

GAME 2 – Adelphi 5, Pace 4
The Setters came up just short in the finale. Pace trimmed an Adelphi 5-2 lead down to just one run with no outs in the sixth, but were unable to get the equalizer.

After allowing two Panther runs in the first, Pace answered right back with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Miller and Iverson each knocked sacrifice flies.

Trailing 5-2 in the sixth, an RBI fielder's choice from Ryan and an RBI double from Acosta brought the Blue and Gold within one run.

Adelphi was then able to escape a second-and-third with no outs situation in the sixth before denying a potential tying run on third to end the game.

Freshman pitcher Anna Acevedo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) tossed a complete game in her Setter debut, allowing four earned runs on eight Adelphi hits.

Up Next
Pace hosts Adelphi for two more games tomorrow, beginning once again at noon. It will be the Setters' 2021 Senior Day.
