GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Facing a team that was receiving votes in the latest National top-25 poll, the Pace University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Adelphi on Saturday. The 1-1 day shifts the Setters' early season record to 2-1 in 2021.
Game One – Pace 11, Adelphi 6
The Setters jumped out to the early lead in the doubleheader, putting three runs across in the top of the first inning. They were then able to break the game open in the sixth as a four-spot provided the visitors with a 9-2 lead.
Four Setters registered multiple hits in the opener, including a 2-for-5, four-RBI effort from
Miles Kelly (Mattituck, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River). Kelly's two-out, two-run home run in the top of the first inning kick-started the Setters' offense. He also doubled home a pair of runners in the sixth.
Greg Tsouprakos (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) went deep in the victory as well, hammering a two-run blast in the ninth inning to put Pace up 11-4.
Another pair of seniors provided multiple knocks as
Matt Almonte (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) finished 2-for-4 at the dish, and
Dean DePreta (Stamford, Conn./Westhill High School) tallied a 2-for-5 game.
On the other side of the ball, senior pitcher
Thomas Ippolito (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) notched his 11
th career victory in the Blue and Gold.
The left-hander posted four shutout innings in relief of starting pitcher
Nick Palumbo (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills High School). Ippolito and Palumbo each scattered three hits, while combining for nine strikeouts across seven frames.
Game Two – Adelphi 5, Pace 2 (Seven Innings)
After 11 hits in the first contest of the day, the Blue and Gold's offense mustered just four in the finale. Adelphi's Nicolas Luc allowed just one run, while striking out nine in six innings.
Pace's first run came off a
Harrison Treble (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Oyster Bay) RBI double in the fourth, which brought home DePreta after he also doubled to begin the inning.
Almonte would provide the Setters' second tally when he launched a solo home run in the seventh inning. Almonte finished the doubleheader at 3-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBIs and a walk.
Pace continued to bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but Adelphi closed the door with a 5-2 final.
