Relive the Record: 2000-01 Pace Women's Basketball Wins NCAA Northeast Regional

Pace Athletics RELIVE the RECORD

As we get set for the 2020-21 school year, we would like to revisit some of the major team and individual records that have been broken in recent seasons.

The 2000-01 Pace University women's basketball team enjoyed a season to remember nearly 20 years ago. The Setters' historic campaign was highlighted by an epic run through the NCAA Northeast Regionals, which included victories over Philadelphia, Saint Rose and Bentley to earn the program's second-ever berth into the NCAA Elite Eight (1984-85).

The Blue and Gold would go on to complete the year with a 24-8 record, cementing themselves as one of the best teams in school history. Appearing regularly in the national rankings throughout the regular season, Pace finished at No. 8 in the final WBCA Poll of 2000-01.

Head Carrie Seymour pulled all of the right strings in her ninth season at the helm of Pace Women's Basketball. She not only completed her sixth 20-win campaign, but was also selected as the MET/NIT Co-Coach of the Year for the third time. Seymour is now entering her 29th year at Pace in 2020-21, standing with 486 career victories.

Defense led the way for most of the Setters' success in 2000-01. Pace finished the year ranked 12th in the nation in defensive field-goal percentage and 16th in scoring defense. Junior All-American, Wanda Maynard-Morris, was at the forefront of those efforts with an average of nearly four steals per game. In fact, her 116 takeaways that year are still the second-most in a single season in program history.

Maynard-Morris' defensive abilities told just a small part of the story. The Pace Athletics Hall of Famer supplemented her steals with averages of 17.9 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.8 blocks per contest. Her versatility was especially showcased when she registered a near quadruple-double of 26 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists, and nine steals in a win over Saint Michael's.

Maynard-Morris went on to be named the Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA Regionals after averaging a remarkable 28.3 points and 14.7 rebounds across the three wins. She was especially dominant in the final win over Bentley when she poured in 30 points, to go along with 15 rebounds and six assists.

Teammates, Celia Collymore (Second Team) and Astrid Best (Third Team), joined Maynard-Morris on NE10 All-Conference Teams following the regular season. Collymore registered 12.2 points and 4.0 assists per game while Best put forth averages of 12.5 points and 7.7 boards.
