ETTRICK, Va. – On the first day of a busy opening weekend, the Pace University softball team put together a doubleheader sweep of Virginia State on Friday evening. The Setters jumped out to 4-0 leads in both contests en route to posting winning scores of 5-3 and 4-3.
Pace enjoyed a pair of solid pitching performances from sophomore
Kate Dolinski (Fort Langley, British Columbia/Yale Secondary) and senior
Emma Bernet (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W Baker), who combined to allow just five earned runs across 14 innings of action.
Dolinski started things with a complete game in the opener with six strikeouts. Bernet followed with a similar stat line in Game Two, finishing with seven strikeouts while allowing six hits.
Junior
Briana Ryan (Wilmington, Calif./Carson) and freshman
Gwen Pederson (Sylmar, Calif./Granada Hills Charter) led the charge offensively on Friday. Ryan compiled a 6-for-8 afternoon, tallying three hits in both games.
Pederson followed with a 5-for-8 clip at the dish with three runs scored. She started Pace's scoring in the second game, tripling home a pair in the first inning.
Pace's second victory of the day featured 15 hits for the Setters' lineup. Seniors
Jillian Gartner (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy),
Alexandra Monteleone (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) and
Alexandra Cusumano (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By The Sea) all posted multi-hit efforts.
