PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Playing their first overtime game of the season, the Pace University men's basketball team was defeated by Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday night by a score of 98-94. The loss moves the Setters to 16-9 overall this season, including an 8-8 record inside the Northeast-10 Conference.
In a back-and-forth contest that featured seven different lead changes, a three-pointer off the hand of Southern Connecticut's CJ Seaforth with four seconds left sent the game into overtime. In extra time, it was the Owls who capitalized on a cold-shooting Pace team.
The Setters made just three of their nine shots in overtime as SCSU led for the entire five minutes. Pace stayed within a single possession for most of it until back-to-back layups from Greg Jones yielded a six-point edge for the Owls with 1:46 left.
Austin Gilbertson (Etters, Pa./Trinity) would go on to cut the lead back down to three at the 1:26 mark, and would actually have another attempt at tying the game with less than a minute left but that three-pointer would go off the mark.
Pace put five players in double figures on Tuesday night, led by a team-best 26 points from the NE10's leading scorer, Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, N.J./Southern Regional). He also nabbed 12 rebounds to signify his 10th double-double of the season. Wejnert chipped in a pair of blocks as well.
Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) tallied a double-double of his own, finishing the night with 12 points and 10 assists. Jacobs, the NE10's leader in helpers this season (8.1), has now racked up double-figure assists in six games this season.
Austin Gilbertson (Etters, Pa./Trinity) tied a season-high with 20 points on Tuesday night, finishing 7-of-10 from the field. He did most of his damage from long range, knocking in four of his six attempts from beyond the arc.
Senior Tyrone Cohen, Jr. (Woodside, N.Y./Christ the King / Holy Cross University / Broward College) also made four three-balls on the way to 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
Pace's final player in double figures was freshman Christian Adams (New Haven, Conn./Hamden Hall), who put in 13 points. He also registered a team-high three steals.
Pace made 12 three-pointers in the game at a 52.2% clip, both of which served as new season-bests. Altogether, the Setters finished 32-of-57 from the field which was their third-highest field-goal percentage of the season (56.1).
