Men's Basketball Falls Just Short at SCSU, 64-61

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Seeing their first action of the New Year, the Pace University men's basketball team fell just short in a Saturday afternoon contest at Southern Connecticut State, 64-61. The loss shifts the Setters' record to 11-3 this season, including a 3-2 mark inside the NE10.

The Owls' victory was helped by an 11-4 run to open the second half. SCSU was able to stretch their six-point halftime lead to as many as 13 at the 15:35 mark.

The Setters spent the majority of the final 20 minutes on the comeback trail. Pace cut the Owls' lead to five points on a pair of occasions before trimming the edge to just three points (50-47) at the 8:11 mark.

With Pace nipping at their heels, SCSU continued to answer down the stretch. A 9-2 spurt put the Owls back up, 59-49, with 3:53 remaining.

The Setters kept on battling, however, as a Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) three-pointer cut the SCSU advantage to just one point with 12 ticks on the clock.

Pace's last gasp would come just a few moments later when Christian Adams' (New Haven, Conn./Hamden Hall) attempt at a game-tying three-pointer was just off the mark as time expired.

Senior Tyrone Cohen, Jr. (Woodside, N.Y./Christ the King / Holy Cross University / Broward College) led a balanced Pace attack with a team-high 15 points. He has now posted double figures in three straight contests.

Jacobs and Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, N.J./Southern Regional) joined in with double-digit efforts of their own, putting in 14 and 13 points respectively. Wejnert, the NE10's leading scorer this season, has reached double figures in every game of his senior year.

Jacobs also led the Setters with a season-best seven rebounds, in addition to dishing out a team-high five assists.

Junior Austin Gilbertson (Etters, Pa./Trinity) matched Jacobs with seven rebounds on day, while also leading the Setters with three steals.
