New Haven, Conn. – Led by another record-breaking performance from senior Dan Wirchansky (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland/RCC), the Pace University baseball team tallied a 4-0 win at Southern Connecticut State on Thursday. The Setters, who have now clinched a berth into their fifth straight NE10 Tournament, improve to 28-14 this season (14-9, NE10).
Wirchansky, who broke Pace's single-season strikeout record during his last time out, added the career mark to his illustrious resume as well. The left-hander punched out eight batters on Thursday to put his total to 225, which is now the most in school history.
Wirchansky also earned his sixth victory of the season, tossing 7.1 innings of shutout baseball. He lowers his miniscule ERA to 1.28 this year, while upping his season strikeout tally to 97—tops in the NE10.
Pace's offense, which registered 17 hits, helped out with a pair of runs in the second inning along with insurance tallies in both the fifth and sixth.
Michael Barbato (Sparkill, NY/Tappan Zee), Brian Bohlander (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) and Noah Clement (Voorhees, NJ/Roman Catholic High School) each put together 3-for-5 outings at the plate, while Justin Scotto (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional High School) and Michael Salmonese (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) also posted multi-hit efforts.
Salmonese continues to lead the entire NE10 in batting average this season with a mark of .386. He also serves as the Setters' team leader in total hits (61), slugging percentage (.500) and on-base percentage (.443).
