PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Highlighted by a record-breaking effort from Dan Wirchansky (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland/RCC), the Pace University baseball team posted an 8-3 victory over New Haven on Wednesday. The Setters have now won four games in a row to improve to 25-12 this season (11-8, NE10).
Wirchansky, who is now 5-1 on the mound, tallied 13 strikeouts across eight triumphant innings. He lowered his ERA to just 1.43 on the year after allowing one earned run against the Chargers.
Wirchansky has now totaled 89 punchouts in 2019, setting a new Pace record for a single season. He passes David Qualben's previous mark of 84 set in 2005.
Wirchansky's dominance also brings him just four strikeouts shy of tying the Setters' all-time strikeout mark of 221 (Mackenzie King).
Wirchansky has been victorious in four consecutive starts, allowing just three earned runs during that time (30 innings).
Pace's offense was produced across five scoring innings, including a three-spot in the eighth. The Setters took their first lead off a Michael Salmonese (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) RBI single in the fifth inning.
Speaking of Salmonese, he finished 2-for-5 on the afternoon to raise his average to .390 this season. Salmonese has recorded at least one hit in 29 games, and now leads the NE10 in batting during his senior campaign.
