PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Continuing a stretch of non-conference action, the Pace University baseball team nabbed a pair of wins against Goldey-Beacom College on Friday afternoon. The 8-4 and 5-0 triumphs improve the Setters' record to 24-12 overall this season.
Notable Numbers
Junior Brian Bohlander (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) extended his on-base streak to 23 consecutive games on Friday (six-game hitting streak). He finished the afternoon 2-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Michael Salmonese (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) put together a 3-for-7 day at the dish with an RBI, a run scored and a walk. The senior raises his batting average to .389 this season, which ranks second in the NE10.
Game One Recap – Pace 8, Goldey-Beacom 4
The Setters battled back from 3-0 and 4-1 deficits in the opener. Trailing 4-3 after 7.5 innings, Pace broke the game open with a five-run eighth.
Pace's big inning was sparked when Bohlander's sac bunt attempt with runners on first and second was thrown away. Dean DePreta (Stamford, CT/Westhill High School) and Michael Barbato (Sparkill, NY/Tappan Zee) each scored on the play to give the Setters a 5-4 lead.
Alex Pia (Guilford, CT/Xavier) and Harrison Treble (Oyster Bay, NY/Oyster Bay/St. Bonaventure) followed up with RBI singles in the eighth while Salmonese recorded a sac fly.
On the mound, Thomas Ippolito (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) tallied nine strikeouts in a complete-game victory. He is now 4-1 this season.
DePreta and Pia each finished with a team-best two hits in the contest, combining to go 4-for-7 with three runs scored.
Game Two Recap – Pace 5, Goldey-Beacom 0
The Setters had another complete-game triumph on the mound in Game Two. Senior Alex Busby (Landing, NJ/Roxbury / County College of Morris) put together seven shutout innings to help Pace to the doubleheader sweep.
A pair of Goldey-Beacom mishaps provided the Blue and Gold with a 4-0 edge in the day's finale.
Pia scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning after hammering a one-out double off the top of the wall in left field.
A Lightning error with the bases loaded in the second plated three more runs for Pace. Joseph Curcio (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills High School), Rafael Figuereo (Fishkill, NY/John Jay East Fishkill High School) and Bohlander all scored on the play.
Pia doubled once again in the sixth, scoring Salmonese from first to give the Setters a 5-0 edge.
