POMONA, N.Y. – Sparked by yet another noteworthy effort from senior
Dan Wirchansky (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland/RCC), the Pace University baseball team tallied a 7-2 win over Nyack College on Thursday afternoon. The non-conference victory moves the Setters' overall record to 22-12 this season.
Wirchansky continued his latest stretch of dominance with another 11 strikeouts across seven triumphant innings. He has tallied double-figure punchouts in three consecutive games, totaling 38 over his last 22 innings of work. In fact, he has now racked up 204 career strikeouts, which moves him into to second in Pace's record books.
Wirchansky, who is 4-1 this season with a 1.47 ERA, is just eight strikeouts shy of tying the Setters' single-season record set by David Qualben in 2005 (84).
Junior
Brian Bohlander (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) continued an impressive streak of his own on Thursday, reaching base for the 21
st straight game. Bohlander's RBI double in the fourth plated a pair of runs to give the Setters a 2-1 lead.
Pace tacked on two more in the fifth courtesy of an RBI bunt single from
Matt Bass (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) and a sac fly from
Luke Jacobi (Edison, NJ/JP Stevens).
Jacobi struck again in the seventh with an RBI base hit to put the Blue and Gold ahead, 5-1.
Seniors
Alex Pia (Guilford, CT/Xavier) and
Michael Barbato (Sparkill, NY/Tappan Zee) capped off the Pace onslaught with RBI hits in the eighth and ninth innings.
As a team, the Setters piled up 15 hits—a team-best three coming off the bat of freshman
Rafael Figuereo (Fishkill, NY/John Jay East Fishkill High School).
Senior
Michael Salmonese (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) put together a 2-for-5 day at the dish to move his batting average to .387 this season (second in the NE10).
