PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace University softball team extended their win streak to six games on Wednesday afternoon, earning their third straight sweep with a pair of victories over Southern Connecticut State. The 8-0 and 4-1 wins improve Pace's record this season to 15-18.
Game One Recap: Pace 8, SCSU 0 (Six Innings)
It was a third-straight victory via the run rule in the opener, as
Annie Carberry's (Colorado Springs, CO/Pine Creek) RBI double scored
NancyAnn Revilla (Staten Island, NY/Port Richmond) for the team's eighth and final run.
The Setters were led by
Emma Bernet (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W Baker) in the circle, who tossed a complete six innings of work to pick up her sixth win of the year. The junior allowed just four hits and walked one while striking out four. Bernet has now won her last three starts, allowing a lone earned run during that stretch.
With Bernet dealing, the Setters found themselves locked in a pitching duel through the early going. Pace had hits in each of the first four innings but were unable to plate any runs, sending the game to the fifth still scoreless.
Â
Pace would finally breakthrough in the fifth in a big way. The Blue and Gold hung up a six spot in the frame on five hits and an Owl error to decidedly swing momentum to their side.
Niyah Brown (Chino, CA/Chino Hills) drove in the first run on a fielder's choice as
Arielle Acosta (Union City, CA/Moreau Catholic High School) avoided a tag at home.
Briana Ryan (Wilmington, CA/Carson) then followed up with a single that was misplayed in the outfield, allowing Brown and
Emma Carruth (Torrance, CA/Beverly Hills) to score. Carberry hit an RBI single before
Lindsey Ah Soon (Ewa Beach, HI/Kamehameha Kapalama) fired the final salvo with a two-run triple.
As Bernet continued to stymie the SCSU bats, the Setters plated the two winning runs in the sixth. A pair of leadoff walks put Brown in position to drive home
Brianna Parks (Herkimer, NY/Herkimer) before Carberry ended the game with her double.
Game Two Recap: Pace 4, SCSU 1
Following the shutout, the Owls were quick to score their first run of the day in the second contest, plating a first-inning run off of
MacKenzie Garrick (South River, NJ/South River). Despite the first inning blemish, the sophomore was able to hold the Owls scoreless for the rest of the affair. Garrick scattered eight hits while striking out two to pick up her fourth win of the season.
The Setters responded in the bottom of the second, as Ah Soon homered to straight-away centerfield with a two-run blast, her first home run of the season and third for her career. Pace would add another run in the fifth off a Brown double that scored
Emma Schafer (Mission Viejo, CA/El Toro) to extend the Setter lead to 3-1.
The final blow of the day game one inning later, as Carberry homered to left center for her second blast of the year. The three-RBI day moves the senior's team-leading total to 25.
The Owls would get the tying run to the plate in the seventh with a two-out single and walk, but Garrick was able to induce the game-ending groundout to secure the win.
