PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Led by stellar pitching in the first game of the day, the Pace University baseball team split a home doubleheader against Le Moyne College on Saturday. The 1-1 day moves the Setters' record to 13-8 overall this season, including a mark of 3-4 inside the NE10.
Game One Recap – Pace 2, Le Moyne 1
Pitching led the Setters to a Game One victory over the Dolphins. Starter
Dan Wirchansky (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland/RCC) put together yet another solid outing, allowing just one run on four hits across seven innings. He finished with seven strikeouts.
Junior
Lorenzo Russo (East Northport, NY/Commack) took the ball from Wirchansky, and shut the door on the Dolphins with scoreless eighth and ninth innings. He yielded just one hit en route to picking up the win out of the bullpen.
Tied 1-1 in the eighth,
Dean DePreta (Stamford, CT/Westhill High School) knocked a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Setters a one-run lead with just three outs left for Le Moyne.
Joseph Curcio (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills High School) scored on the play after leading off the inning with a base hit to left.
Pace's first run came in the fourth inning courtesy of an RBI single from
Brian Bohlander (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) that scored DePreta.
Game Two Recap – Le Moyne 5, Pace 3
A four-run second inning sparked the Dolphins in the second contest of the day. Le Moyne then added another one in the seventh, finishing the game with five unearned runs.
The Setters put forth three scoring innings in Game Two, putting runs across the second, fifth and seventh frames.
Curcio tallied two RBIs and two walks in the second contest, while DePreta registered two more hits. Sophomore
Matt Bass (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) also recorded multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Thomas Ippolito (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) took the mound in the finale, allowing five unearned runs in seven innings of action.
Frankie Giuliano (Bronx, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) tossed back-to-back scoreless innings in relief of Ippolito.
