PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace University baseball team was victorious in a Wednesday afternoon pitching duel, defeating New Haven by a score of 2-0. With the win, the Setters improve to 12-7 overall and 8-4 at home at Finnerty Field.
A pair of runs in the first was all that was needed for the Blue and Gold pitching staff, who were led by six innings from starter
Alex Busby (Landing, NJ/Roxbury / County College of Morris). The senior collected his first win of 2019 by limiting the Chargers to three hits and three walks while striking out five.
Lorenzo Russo (East Northport, NY/Commack) and
Dan Wirchansky (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland/RCC) closed the door over the final three innings. Russo struck out three during his work in the seventh and eighth innings, while Wirchansky collected his second-career save, his first since 2017, by throwing a one-hit ninth.
The Setters generated their first inning runs via small ball. After
Michael Salmonese (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) and
Joseph Curcio (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills High School) reached to open the inning, back-to-back sacrifice flies from
Dean DePreta (Stamford, CT/Westhill High School) and
Michael Barbato (Sparkill, NY/Tappan Zee) scored the only runs Pace would need for the day.
Salmonese led all Pace batters with a 3-for-4 day, including a double. His batting average now sits at .434 for the season.
