PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace University softball team earned their first home wins of the season on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader against Northeast-10 Conference foe, Stonehill. The 6-2 and 4-1 victories move the Setters' early-season record to 5-5 and 2-2 against the NE10.
Inside the Numbers:
The Setters got a pair of strong starting pitching performances on Saturday.
Kate Dolinski (Fort Langley, B.C./Yale Secondary) and
Emma Bernet (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W Baker) combined for a pair of complete games, pitching seven innings each while surrendering just two earned runs. Dolinski improved to 3-1 with a five-strikeout effort, allowing two runs on five hits. Bernet, meanwhile, moved to 2-2 on the back of a three-hitter that featured a lone unearned run and four punchouts.
Â
Annie Carberry (Colorado Springs, CO/Pine Creek) went 4-for-6 over the two games, driving in four RBIs while scoring a run.
Arielle Acosta (Union City, CA/Moreau Catholic High School) and
Emma Carruth (Torrance, CA/Beverly Hills) each put together two-hit games in the backend of the doubleheader.
Â
The Setters made plays all over the base paths, stealing nine bases on the day. Pace swiped eight bags in the second game, including five in the fourth inning alone.
Â
Game One – Pace 6, Stonehill 2
Pace took momentum in the opener with a four-spot in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. With the bases loaded and one away, Carberry hit a bases-clearing single to score
Zoie Iverson (Oregon City, OR/Alliance Charter Academy/ Oregon City High School),
Briana Ryan (Wilmington, CA/Carson) and
Jillian Gartner (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy). Acosta would bring home Carberry two batters later with a single of her own.
Â
Stonehill would get on the board in the fourth with a Sophie Perez RBI double. Carberry would strike again in the bottom frame, finding the gap in left center to bring Ryan home with a double. Pace added an insurance run in the sixth with a Gartner sacrifice fly to score Carruth.
Â
The Skyhawks got to Dolinski again in the seventh with a Cassie Holmgren sacrifice fly, but the freshman drew another flyout in the following at-bat to end the game with a Stonehill runner on third.
Â
Game Two – Pace 4, Stonehill 1
It would be the Skyhawks who struck first in Game Two, as Perez reached on a double and later scored on an error. That would end up being the only trouble Bernet would face all day, as the sophomore allowed just two hits over the final five innings and never letting a runner advance past second base.
Â
Pace would get on the board in the third, as Iverson hit a double with the bases loaded to drive home Acosta and Carruth. One inning later, the Setters caused chaos on the bases to score two more runs. With two away,
Lindsey Ah Soon (Ewa Beach, HI/Kamehameha Kapalama) drew a walk before stealing second. An Acosta RBI single brought Ah Soon home before Acosta nabbed a stolen base of her own. Carruth reached on a bunt single, and drew the throw on her steal of second to allow Acosta to steal home with a 4-2 lead.
Â
The Skyhawks were unable to mount a response, as Stonehill went nine up, nine down against Bernet over her final three innings of work.
