Pace Softball Drops Two One-Run Games to Bentley

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Seeing their first action at home this season, the Pace University softball team dropped a pair of one-run contests to Bentley on Saturday afternoon.

Inside the Numbers
Freshman Arielle Acosta (Union City, CA/Moreau Catholic High School) was Pace's top offensive performer over the two games, going 4-for-8 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Emma Carruth (Torrance, CA/Beverly Hills), Niyah Brown (Chino, CA/Chino Hills) and Jillian Gartner (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) also put together multi-hit efforts in one of the two games.

Freshman pitcher Maxibel Garcia (Passaic, NJ/Paterson Charter School for Science and Technology) put together an extended relief appearance in the circle in Game Two, allowing one earned run across 5.2 innings.

Game One - Bentley 7, Pace 6 (Eight Inn.)
Pace struck first in the opener, as an Acosta lead-off triple in the first put Pace in business early. After Carruth recorded an infield single one batter later, Acosta scored on the throw as the junior stole second. The Falcons would pull even in the second, but a Brianna Ryan single in the third scored Carruth to put the Setters up 2-1.

The score would stay there until the fifth when a Gabby Casalino two-run home run put Bentley ahead 3-2. The Falcons capitalized on Pace's defensive miscues in the sixth, plating a trio of unearned runs to extend their lead to 6-2.

Down but not out, Pace mounted a comeback to force extras. With the bases loaded in the sixth, Acosta hit a two RBI single to plate Emma Schafer (Mission Viejo, CA/El Toro) and Jillian Gartner (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) to cut the lead to 6-4.

Then in the seventh, Lindsey Ah Soon (Ewa Beach, HI/Kamehameha Kapalama) hit a one-out triple to score Alexandra Cusumano (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph By The Sea) before being brought home by a Zoie Iverson (Oregon City, OR/Alliance Charter Academy/ Oregon City High School) double one batter later. The Setters would leave the winning run stranded at second however, and Bentley would score in the bottom of the eighth. Pace had another opportunity to tie the game in the bottom half, moving the tying run to third, but a Cusumano line out back to the pitcher closed the door in the opener.

Game Two - Bentley 8, Pace 7
The Setters found themselves in an early hole in the second game, trailing 6-1 in the second inning. Once again, Pace showed their resiliency to battle their way back into the game.

The Blue and Gold hung a four-spot in the third inning, as a lead-off double by Schafer and a follow-up triple by Acosta got the rally started. A Carruth sac fly scored Acosta, while three straight singles by Ryan, Alexandra Monteleone (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane), and Gartner brought home another pair of runs to pull Pace within one, 6-5.

The Falcons added a run in the fourth, but Brown and Cusumano would each score in the fifth to even the score at 7-7.

Despite the gritty comeback, an error in the sixth allowed Bentley to score the ultimate game-winning run, as Pace was only able to record one hit over the final two innings.

Up Next
The Setters will be in action at home once again tomorrow, hosting a doubleheader against Stonehill College at noon.
