Pace Baseball Continues Hot Start With Sweep of Stonehill

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Pitching and clutch hitting continued to reign supreme for the Pace University baseball team on Saturday afternoon, as the Setters swept a pair of seven-inning games against Stonehill College. After winning their fourth home game with a fourth walk-off in the opener, Pace treated the home crowd to a first of 2019 with a win in regulation. With the sweep, the Blue and Gold improve to 8-1 on the year for the first time since 2006.

The Setters scored twice in the 7th inning to earn a 2-1 victory in Saturday's first contest, as back-to-back bases-loaded hits from Harrison Treble (Oyster Bay, NY/Oyster Bay/St. Bonaventure) and Michael Salmonese (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) capped off the final inning rally.

It was a pitcher's duel in the opener, as Dan Wirchansky (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland/RCC) went six innings allowing a lone run while striking out a season-high 10. The lone blemish on the senior's statline was a fourth-inning solo home run by Patrick Downey that served as the game's only score until the bottom of the seventh. Angus McCloskey (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) earned the win after a perfect inning of work, striking out one.

Lorenzo Russo (East Northport, NY/Commack) took the mound for Game Two, and outside of a rough first inning of work, was solid en route to his first win of the year. The junior went five innings deep, and threw four scoreless after getting tagged for a pair of runs in the first. Russo also racked up the punchouts, striking out a season-high seven.

Pace responded to the Skyhawk runs with a pair of their own in the second. Brian Bohlander's (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) first triple of the season drove home Dean DePreta (Stamford, CT/Westhill High School), while an Alex Pia (Guilford, CT/Xavier) sacrifice fly scored Bohlander to tie the game at 2-2. One inning later, a DePreta double brought home Matt Bass (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) to give the Setters a lead that they wouldn't surrender. Luke Jacobi (Edison, NJ/JP Stevens) added an insurance run in the fifth with an RBI single to score Salmonese.

Joe Pizzingrillo (Garden City, NY/Chaminade) closed out the game with a perfect two innings, striking out three and collecting his first career save.

Overall, it was yet another solid day at the plate for the duo of Jacobi and Salmonese who continue to hit everything thrown at them. Jacobi went 4-for-6 over the doubleheader, moving his batting average to a team-high .567. Salmonese doesn't trail far behind, now hitting .548 after a 4-for-6 day of his own.
