Pace Baseball Takes Down Bloomfield in 12 Innings

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace University baseball team made it two walk-off wins in a row on Thursday, defeating Bloomfield College, 7-6, in 12 innings. The Setters, who are now 6-1 this season, have won all three of their home games in walk-off fashion.

Trailing 6-5 heading into the bottom of the 12th, Pace loaded the bases with one out following two singles, a sac bunt and an intentional walk.

Justin Scotto (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional High School) would then a chop a ground ball to short, and beat out Bloomfield's attempt at a game-ending double play. Meanwhile, Luke Jacobi (Edison, NJ/JP Stevens) scored from third to tie the game before Dean DePreta (Stamford, CT/Westhill High School) raced home all the way from second to clinch the thrilling victory.

Prior to the dramatics, Pace scored runs in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 5-0 lead on Bloomfield. The Bears answered with one run in the sixth prior to tying the game with a four-spot in the eighth.

Jacobi and Michael Salmonese (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick), Pace's two top hitters this season, led the offense with three hits apiece, while DePreta chipped in two of his own.

Senior Alex Busby (Landing, NJ/Roxbury / County College of Morris) earned the start on the mound for the Setters, allowing just one earned run in six innings of action. He struck out five Bloomfield batters, while walking just one.

Thomas Ippolito (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) tossed a scoreless inning out of the bullpen, while John DiMartino, Jr. recorded shutout frames in the 10th and 11th frames. Nelson Arroyo (Washingtonville, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) pitched the 12th for the Blue and Gold to earn his first-career win.
