ALBANY, N.Y. – Piloted by 40 points from senior Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, N.J./Southern Regional), the Pace University men's basketball team logged a 94-82 win at the College of Saint Rose on Wednesday night. The Setters are now off to the best start in program history, currently sitting with a record of 8-0 this season.
Pace's decisive win, which is the first at Saint Rose since 2011, improves the team to 3-0 inside the NE10. The Setters have now defeated their eight opponents this year by an average of 18.4 points per game, beating all but one by double figures.
Wejnert continued what has been a masterful senior season thus far. The NE10's leading scorer is now averaging 25.4 points per contest after shooting 16-of-22 from the field on Wednesday.
Wejnert also posted 12 rebounds, marking this third double-double of the season. In fact, Wejnert has grabbed at least eight boards in seven of Pace's eight contests.Â
Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) posted a double-double of his own, finishing the night with 19 points and 12 assists. The junior guard is now averaging 7.9 helpers per outing, which ranks second in the NE10.
Three other members of the Blue and Gold also scored in double figures on Wednesday. Bryan Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Canterbury School), Christian Adams (New Haven, Conn./Hamden Hall) and Austin Gilbertson (Etters, Pa./Trinity) combined for 33 points in the contest.
The Setters never trailed versus the Golden Knights, using a game-opening 17-5 run to seize the early momentum. Pace would go on to close the half with an 8-2 stretch that produced a 13-point edge at the break.
Saint Rose would cut the lead to as low as five points at the 13:04 mark of the second half. Pace answered with a 9-2 run of their own before ultimately cruising to the finish line.
The Blue and Gold shot a season best 59.1 percent from the field (39-of-66), while going 11-for-14 from the free-throw line.
