PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Seeing their final action of the calendar year, the Pace University men's basketball team earned an 80-76 win over Southern New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon. The triumph improves the Setters' record to 11-2 this season, while SNHU moves to 8-4.
It was a hard fought victory for the Blue and Gold as they climbed back from a nine-point halftime deficit.
A three-pointer from Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, N.J./Southern Regional) with 7:51 remaining tied that game (65-65) for the first time since the score was 7-7. The Setters would then pull ahead seconds later following a layup from Bryan Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Canterbury School).
Powell would go on to score six of Pace's final nine points, including a put-back lay-up with less than 30 seconds left to give the Setters a five-point lead.
Powell finished tied for the team lead in points, pouring in 17 on 8-of-11 shooting. He also hauled in 12 rebounds, marking his third double-double of the season.
Powell's 17 points were matched by senior Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, N.J./Southern Regional), while three other Setters tallied double-figure afternoons as well.
Senior Tyrone Cohen, Jr. (Woodside, N.Y./Christ the King / Holy Cross University / Broward College) registered 14 points, while juniors Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) and Austin Gilbertson (Etters, Pa./Trinity) combined for 23. Jacobs also dished out a team-best nine assists.
Jacobs, who leads the nation in total helpers this season (109), has tallied at least eight assists in eight contests this season.
The Setters turned the ball over a season-low four times, while making nine three-pointers (season-high) for the third straight game.
