PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Despite trailing by as many as 13 points in the first half, the Pace University men's basketball team posted a 69-61 win over Molloy College on Sunday afternoon. The victory moves the Setters' record to 7-0 this season, matching the best start in program history (1996-97).
Trailing by five with less than four minutes remaining, the Setters knocked in three-pointers on three consecutive possessions to nab a lead that they would not relinquish.
Tyrone Cohen, Jr. (Woodside, N.Y./Christ the King / Holy Cross University / Broward College) put in the first one to cap off his game-high 17 points, while
Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) hit back-to-back long balls to put Pace ahead for good.
The Setters' flurry of three-pointers served as the final field goals of the contest. Pace closed with six-straight free throws, which wrapped up a game-ending 15-1 run.
Cohen Jr. was joined by two others in double figures. Jacobs finished with 14 points, to go along with seven assists, while
Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, N.J./Southern Regional) registered 13 points. Wejnert also hauled in a team-high nine rebounds.
Ray Montilus (Union, N.J./Pope John XXII), the NE10's leader in steals this season, piled up six more takeaways on Sunday. He also chipped in six points and three assists.
The Setters racked up a season-high eight blocks in the contest, including three from freshman
Bryan Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Canterbury School).
Pace's defense also forced 21 Molloy turnovers, while limiting the Lions to 20-of-51 shooting from the field (39.2 percent).
