Pace Men's Basketball Defeats Georgian Court, 79-69, in Season Opener

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Playing their first game of the 2019-20 season, the Pace University men's basketball team earned a 79-69 triumph over Georgian Court University on Friday afternoon.
 
How it Happened
*The Setters jumped out to a 13-point lead in the first six minutes of play following an 11-point run.
 
*Pace maintained the lead throughout the first half while seeing its largest lead of the game at 14 points at the 7:17 mark.

*In the second half, Georgian Court capitalized on its trips to the line, cutting the deficit to three after sinking eight straight free throws.

*The Setters put a stop to the bleeding and countered with eight consecutive made free-throw attempts of their own to secure the 10-point victory.
 
Inside the Numbers
Senior forward Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, N.J./Southern Regional) led the Blue and Gold's scoring with a career-best 29 points while junior Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) followed with 20.
 
Jacobs frequented the free-throw line throughout the afternoon, converting on all 10 of his attempts for half of his point total. He also added a pair of 3-pointers, and six assists on offense.
 
Freshman Bryan Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Canterbury School) recorded a double-double in his first career game with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
 
Defensively, Pace recorded eight steals with three Setters creating takeaways on multiple occasions. Ray Montilus (Union, N.J./Pope John XXII), Austin Gilbertson (Etters, Pa./Trinity) and Jacobs each recorded two steals on the afternoon with Pace scoring 15 points off turnovers.
 
The Setters racked up 44 points in the paint while also outscoring Georgian Court by eight in fast breaks.

The Setters will resume action tomorrow at 4 p.m. when they take on Queens College at Adelphi University.
