PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - The Pace University men's basketball team defeated the University of New Haven on Tuesday night with a final score of 77-61. The Setters improve to a perfect 6-0 heading into the Thanksgiving Break. The last time Pace started a season with six straight wins was in 1996 when the team started 7-0.
The Setters got off to a bit of a slow start trailing by as many as eight points in the first half, but managed to cut the deficit to three heading into the break.
Â
In the second half, Pace took its first lead of the game since leading 4-2 in the first few minutes of play. A defensive rebound by
Christian Adams (New Haven, Conn./Hamden Hall) turned into a layup on the other end, lifting the Setters in front 42-40.
Â
Pace would go on to dominate the second half, shooting 63 percent from the field and 60 percent from three-point range, sparking several small runs which resulted in a 19-point lead with just over five minutes to play.
Â
Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, N.J./Southern Regional) led all scorers with 30 points on 11-of-16 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from three-point range. The senior added five rebounds, three blocks and a steal to cap off his second highest scoring total of 2019.
Â
Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) reached a career milestone when he delivered a pass to teammate
Austin Gilbertson (Etters, Pa./Trinity) who converted on the three-point bucket in the second half. Jacobs now has more than 300 career assists and ranks No. 14 on the program's all-time list. He finished the night with 12 points, five rebounds and eight assists.
Â
Christian Adams (New Haven, Conn./Hamden Hall) was the second leading scorer for the Setters on the evening. Adams has now scored 15 points in back-to-back games, while also adding a pair of blocks in Tuesday's contest.
Â
Gilbertson was one of four Setters to score double-digits and one of three to sink two shots from beyond the arc. Gilbertson finished with 13 points while registering season highs in assists (7), rebounds (6) and steals (3).
Â
However, Gilbertson's three steals were topped by classmate
Ray Montilus (Union, N.J./Pope John XXII) who came up with the ball on the defense end four times – his highest total thus far in 2019.
