SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Despite facing a halftime deficit, the Pace University men's basketball team opened NE10 play with a 78-66 win at American International College on Saturday. The triumph moves the Setters' record to 5-0 this season, signifying their best start since 1996.
Trailing by four points at halftime, the Setters roared back by outscoring AIC, 48-32, in the second half. Pace's victory was highlighted by a 17-3 run mid-way through the final 20 minutes.
Senior
Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, N.J./Southern Regional) was once again at the forefront for the Setters. The New Jersey native poured in a career-high 33 points on 12-of-18 shooting. He also added nine rebounds, nearly missing his third double-double of the season.
Wejnert has now tallied 20 or more points in four of Pace's five games. He is currently averaging 24.0 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.
Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) and
Christian Adams (New Haven, Conn./Hamden Hall) also finished in double figures for the Blue and Gold. Jacobs' stat line featured 18 points, seven assists and four steals. Adams finished with 15 points, three steals and a pair of blocks.
The Setters' offense was sparked by a season-best effort from three-point range. Pace made 8 of its 16 attempts from long range, with Adams finishing a perfect 4-for-4.
The Blue and Gold piled up 14 steals for the second straight game, while forcing 21 total turnovers. Pace's defense limited AIC to 24-of-58 shooting (41.4 percent) from the field, including 9-for-30 from three-point range.
